This is a functional electrical stimulation device that is restoring mobility to those with lower limb paralysis. This system assists those with “foot drop” due to stroke, spinal cord injury, and other pathologies such as Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy.
The WalkAide System consists of a small, lightweight cuff with a device about the size of a deck of cards that is worn just below the knee. The WalkAide produces a gentle electrical signal that stimulates the peroneal nerve and raises the foot at the appropriate time in the gait pattern. The stimulation parameters are matched to the unique gait characteristics of each person. The wearer often gains freedom from use of an AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) and the inherent restrictions on footwear selection – some may even go barefoot! Patients are able to decrease their energy expenditure while increasing their walking speed.
This FDA approved technology has promise to improve mobility and comfort while providing the benefit of functional electrical stimulation. At present this device is not covered by Medicare or private insurance. However, Nobbe Orthopedics is now equipped to provide you with a functional trial prior to purchase.
